Geography Lessons Needed

I wish that the media would take the time to learn the neighborhoods of southern Dallas. I am sick of seeing or hearing news stories that call every area south of I-30 "South Dallas." Yet, when you see stories about areas north of I-30 specifics are used. Examples include Love Field, Knox-Henderson, Oak Lawn, etc.

This has been an ongoing battle. Every e-mail that I have ever sent to authors of such reports has been ignored.

It's not very hard. I'm sure there's someone in your office that knows the difference and would be glad to use a Sharpie and a Mapsco to help you be more accurate. All I'm asking is that you show the same sensitivity that you would show for any other area.

Amen, Rod Davis recently wrote a story for 'D' about the Great Trinity Forest. He said that it was, along with Bexar St., in Oak Cliff.

Anytime something in Oak Cliff, east of I35, makes the news, it is always 'South Dallas'. From now on everything north of Downtown is North Dallas.

If you have any questions I will be at 'Hook, Line and Sinker' in North Dallas.

Don't we know it, Mike. The TV stations are the worst, but The Morning News is pretty bad, too. Pleasant Grove is my favorite -- I'm not quite sure anyone in the media knows where it is. They are also very confused about Lake Highlands.

In the late '80s to early '90s it was the same thing for East Dallas. It took several years of urging and educating to get the media to adopt neighborhood designations such as Old East Dallas and Far East Dallas when describing events east of Central Expressway. Good luck.
