As one of the people that voted against the plan to turn the building into a hotel and condos with a liquor-serving restaurant, I can say that I voted against it because I thought various aspects of the plan needed work e.g. the traffic plan and having liquor near the park. We can only vote on land use and not issues of preservation (except in landmark commission appeals).
I realize that the building wasn't protected, but this still sucks. And yes, maybe preservationists didn't buy the building to save it but this still sucks.
I often vote for developers in many cases if I feel a zoning change is merited, but this ones burns me a little bit.
Maybe next time it would be nice to take the asbestos and freon out first before they demo the building. And oh yeah, post the demo permit next time. Nicely done.

Come on now! Most upscale hotels have restaurants that sell liquor, people in the hotel are not going to the park with a drink. Liquor is prohibited in the park. Liquor is legal in Texas. The zoning was a good case all the new buildings in the area has that height. The building was empty where did they come up with mid-century design. It is sad what is happening at the Plan Commission these days. Owners have a right to clear their Land ,they were issued a permit by the City of Dallas. Why did this developer burn you? The number one reason people do not come to Dallas is It's dull , stiff , hot and not much fun.Business people hate trying to build anything if it means dealing with the city . The Super Bowl is coming and we need the new hotels or the NFL will not come back. I hope you will look at the big picture, we need jobs, added commercial tax base and economic boost in this city so homeowners will get some tax relief.
I always look at the big picture, even in cases that did not pass I often support these types of projects. I just didn't agree with aspects of this case.
